Pikewerks Receives Contract for Enterprise Level Self-Healing
08.18.2008
Pikewerks Corporation, a leading provider of computer security products and advanced research and development, announced today that it has been awarded a Phase II Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) contract from the United Stated States Air Force to develop an enterprise level software self-healing capability. The Operating System (OS) kernel represents a particularly vulnerable point of tamper where changes in functionality affect all applications on the system. Attackers utilize stealthy software packages, rootkits, and other advanced malware to make these malicious modifications. Repairing the compromised system is a significant challenge; to do so, a defender must act as fast, or faster than the attacker and must know exactly what the attacker has done to a system. "During Phase I of this effort, Pikewerks demonstrated the ability to self-heal both the OS kernel and user applications following tamper events", said Sandy Ring, CEO of Pikewerks. "Phase II funding will enable Pikewerks to expand this prototype into a fully-functional product capable of autonomic self-healing in networked environments where a group of machines can sense attacks and repair each other following tamper events. We are currently seeking to establish a partnership with one or more Department of Defense (DoD) prime contractors to assist with the testing and fielding of the product as it matures."
Pikewerks Receives Contract for Anti-Forensics Research and Development
08.14.2008
Pikewerks Corporation, a leading provider of computer security products and advanced research and development, announced today that it has been awarded a Phase II Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) contract from the United Stated States Air Force to conduct anti-forensics research and development. "Anti-forensics is the art and practice of obscuring data storage, transmission, and execution in such a way that it remains hidden from even a professional, dedicated examiner", said Irby Thompson, VP of Operations for Pikewerks. "Pikewerks has identified a number of anti-forensic research areas that would significantly enhance the confidentiality and integrity of executable code, data, and cryptographic material. This includes novel out-of-band storage and transmission techniques that dramatically increase the level of effort required to fully identify, understand, and reverse engineer software systems." The techniques being developed will provide additional strength for existing software protection solutions and enhance the enforcement capabilities of license management systems.

Pikewerks Receives $1.5M to Develop Software Protection Products
Advanced Security Software Protects Intellectual Property and Corporate Assets
02.01.2008
Huntsville, Ala., February 1, 2008 - Pikewerks Corporation, a leading provider of computer security products and research, announced today that it has been awarded two Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II contracts for the development of advanced software protection technologies. The contracts are valued at $1.5M and were awarded by the United States Air Force. Adding to the related funding Pikewerks received last year, these contracts will strengthen the company's research focus on developing innovative software security products for anti-tampering and situational awareness.
The first SBIR Phase II contract provides funds to research and expand Pikewerks' anti-tampering security product for Linux and Solaris, called Electronic ArmorTM, to the Microsoft® Windows XP and Vista platforms using hypervisor-based virtualization. With this effort, Electronic Armor will protect Linux, Solaris, and Windows binary executables from piracy, reverse engineering, and tampering - all of which can incur serious threats to government security and severe financial loss of corporate assets.
Pikewerks' original technology has proven that highly secure protection can be achieved without performance degradation. Protecting applications and other computer programs in this fashion provides realizable value and delivers significant financial return to customers.
The second contract provides for the development of a software-based situational awareness capability for commercial hardware. Today, Pikewerks is developing cutting edge situational awareness technologies to link software protection rules to physical events, creating a computer that is aware of its environment and can choose to take action based on physical modifications, or changes in user behavior. For instance, a computer in an office may not allow a secure application to run if it has detected a new network connection or other hardware modification, such as loss of power, hard drive changes and moving the machine to another location.
"By incorporating environmental characteristics, Pikewerks can further increase the strength of its protection schemes to limit execution of software to specific geographic locations," said Sandy Ring, founder and CEO. "Pikewerks is committed to continuing its R&D efforts for advanced security software and expects to commercialize this research into new products in the first half of 2009."
